Grassroots Grant Assistance Project for Electrification of Community Centre by Solar Energy in Bakelalan, Sarawak

The Government of Japan has extended grant assistance totaling RM174,870 to the Project for the Electrification by Solar Energy in rural area in Sarawak state. Mr. Kazuyoshi YAMAGUCHI, Consul-General of Japan for Sabah, Sarawak and F.T. Labuan signed on behalf of the Government of Japan.
The grant will be used for establishing the electrification system by solar energy in the community hall in Bakelalan in Limbang division which is located close to the border with Indonesia, in order to improve the living conditions of the people in Bakelalan. The project will be implemented by the Centre of Excellence for Rural Informatics (CoERI), the University Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS).

The Government of Japan extends financial assistance to the development projects to meet the diverse needs of the people in developing countries through the scheme of grant assistance. Known as the Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGP), this scheme supports the project proposed by non-governmental organizations (NGOs), hospitals, primary schools, and other nonprofit associations. The GGP has acquired an excellent reputation for providing flexible and timely support to development projects at the grass-roots level.

Since 1996, under the GGP, the Government of Japan has extended the assistance in Sarawak with 11 smallscale but socially and economically important projects amounting to approximately RM 2.1 million in total.
