The Hand-over of the Grant Assistance Project for
the Electrification by Solar Energy in Rural Area in Sarawak

The Government of Japan extended grant assistance totaling RM174,870.14 to the Project for the Electrification by Solar Energy in Rural Area in Sarawak (hereinafter referred to as ”The Project”), in July 2010. The grant was used for establishing the electrification system by solar energy in the community hall in Bakelalan in Limbang division which is located close to the border with Indonesia, in order to improve the living conditions of the people in Bakelalan. The Project was implemented by the Centre of Excellence for Rural Informatics (CoERI), Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) as its e-Bakelalan project.

The Project has been completed recently, and handed over at the occasion of the Launching Ceremony of e-Bakelalan in Bakelalan on December 7, 2010, in the presence of Mr. Kazuyoshi YAMAGUCHI, Consul-General of Japan for Sabah, Sarawak and F.T. Labuan (山口 一義 総領事). Also present were Vice Chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak Prof. Datuk Dr. Khairuddin Abdul Hamid and YB Nelson Balang Rining, Assemblyman for the state of Sarawak.

In his speech, Mr. Kazuyoshi Yamaguchi stated that the project will make villagers have an easy access to the world through the internet and it will be remembered by them as symbol of friendship between the peoples of Japan and Malaysia.

Since 1989, under the GGP, the Government of Japan has extended financial assistance in Sarawak and Sabah with 37 small but socially and economically important projects amounting to approximately RM 5.0 million in total. The Government of Japan is always responsive to the good proposals from NGOs and other nonprofit associations to carry out the projects under the GGP.
