The Consular Office of Japan in Kota Kinabalu set up a booth showcasing traditional Japanese culture and providing comprehensive information about Japan at “Bon Odori Sabah 2026”

A Japanese cultural event “Bon Odori Sabah 2026” was held at Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah from 1st to 2nd August 2026.
In conjection with the above cultural event, a running event "Mochi Run" was also held on 1st August. The flag-off ceremony was attended by Ms. Rimi Repin, Deputy Permanent Secretary 1 of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment Sabah (KePKAS) and Head of Consular Office of Japan in Kota Kinabalu Nakasuji.
The Consular Office of Japan in Kota Kinabalu set up a booth at the venue showcasing traditional Japanese culture such as origami (paper folding), shodo (calligraphy), traditional toys, Yukata and Happi coats with the cooperation of NIHONGO Partners, who have been dispatched to secondary schools in Malaysia in order to support the local Japanese-Language teachers and students. The visitors enjoyed traditional Japanese culture by trying their hand at origami and writing Japanese characters with a Fude (brush) and Sumi (black ink), playing traditional toys like kendama and karuta, and trying on Yukata and Happi coats.
At the booth, the information on tourism to Japan including International Horticultural Expo 2027 (Green×Expo 2027), studying at universities in Japan, and learning Japanese was also provided to the visitors.
The Consular Office of Japan in Kota Kinabalu will continue to promote Japanese culture and Japanese language in collaboration with related like-minded organisations in Malaysia, which will also facilitate cultural exchange between Malaysia and Japan.
